Carbyne Automotive Mechanical Workshop Case Study

    Vehicle: 2016 Toyota Prado
    Odometer: 142,458 km

Task – Customer's request was to inspect the engine for an oil pressure warning and power loss.

The customer noted an oil pressure light and a rough-running engine with no power. Our diagnostic process included:

    • Inspected oil system
    • Blowby test – Failed
    • Compression test – Failed
    • Inspected pistons – Piston failure found
    • Injector test – Pass
    • Oil pump – Visual inspection Pass
Piston Damage Damaged piston found during inspection
    Detailed Diagnostic Procedure:
    • No oil detected on dipstick during prestart check
    • No external oil leaks found
    • Drained oil: only 5L present (should be 7.5L)
    • Oil clean, no contaminants
    • Oil topped up to correct level
    • Oil residue found in intake hoses
    • PCV hose check – excessive smoke and pressure
    Compression Test Results:
    Cylinder PSI
    #1285 psi
    #2360 psi
    #3340 psi
    #4200 psi

    Summary:

We suspect the engine suffered blowby due to piston ring failure, which led to oil loss.
This lack of lubrication likely compromised the piston cooling jets, causing a piston crown cavity and eventual power loss.
